Gifts Writers Really Want
Are you shopping for a loved one who writes? I’ve got you covered with a giant list of helpful gift ideas. I asked writers in the various groups I’m in to name a gift they really want to receive. I’ve compiled their answers in this list of ideas. Scroll to the end to see what gift idea was the #1 requested item.
I’m also including a gift from myself to writers. You can find a coupon code for my editing services below.

Personalized Items:
Many writers mentioned how touched they would be (or have been) to receive an item that was somehow personalized with their book or brand. Suggestions included artwork or plushies related to their book’s main character, jewelry that represents elements from their story, a pen engraved with their name, a customized book embosser, or a print of their book cover.
Cozy items:
Writers often find themselves writing in the wee hours of the night or early morning. Many of them work in a cool, dark basement. You can brighten up their writing space (wherever it is) with these cozy items. (fingerless gloves, fuzzy socks, wearable blanket, candles, warming lap rug, back pillow, cozy pjs, slippers, seat cushion)
Monetary Gifts
When asked what they really wanted, many writers mentioned things that required a financial investment. Some of these included getaways or retreats for writing, spa time to relax and rejuvenate sore muscles, gift cards to book stores (because writers are readers), money for babysitting or house cleaning services to give them more time to write, and money to pay for writing classes and editing services was also requested.
My gift to you: Clients who use coupon code PPGIFT15 when booking an editing service through the contact form will receive a 15% discount on a Pink Pen editing service*.
Subscriptions:
Many writers also said they would like help covering the costs of subscriptions. Suggested ones include Scrivener, Plottr, Canva, MS Word, Spotify, and Patreon. Plottr is my favorite fiction writing tool. You can check it out through my affiliate link here.
High Tech items:
Though many writers keep the tradition of pen and paper alive, the truth is writing in this day and age requires some high-tech equipment. These are the items most requested by writers: an ergonomic mouse, Kindle scribe, wireless keyboard, a timer, and noice-canceling headphones.
Task Items:
Help the writer in your life “get it done” with these suggestions: a lap desk, bullet journal, pens, Emotion Thesaurus, Save the Cat Writes a Novel, or other books on the craft of writing.
Fun Items
Turns out writers have a sense of humor. I love these things that were suggested by them for the gift list. My favorite is the Irish whiskey called Writer’s Tears (but I can’t link to it through Amazon). Some other fun gift ideas included customized key caps, motivational posters, aqua notes (for all those great story ideas that come in the shower), and “Go Away I’m Writing” socks as well as bookish accessories.
Luxe Items:
Want to spoil that special someone? Consider some of these more luxurious suggestions writers requested: a quality electric tea kettle, literary scarf/pashmina/purse, smart writing set, nice pens, bookish jewelry.
#1 Requested item:
So what do writers want the most? Many published authors reported that the best gift they could receive is a review on Amazon and Goodreads. There’s a whole algorithm to the books that show up in search results on Amazon. If an author’s book isn’t receiving enough reviews, it may not rank in search results. This, of course, means lower sales for authors. So if you’ve read the author’s book and liked it, go leave them a review, even if you didn’t purchase the book on Amazon.
For writers who are pre-published, their #1 request was time to write. As mentioned in various places above, this might mean money needs to be spent on hiring services (such as babysitting, house cleaning, cooking, etc.) to cover tasks that often take writers away from their desk. This could also mean giving a gift that sends the writer away to a retreat (organized or self-created) where they can dedicate much-needed time to their writing.
I hope after seeing this list, you have found the perfect gift idea for the writer(s) in your life. Be sure to save this post for later. Please consider pinning or sharing so others will see it. Thanks!
